Industrial Designer | 2021-2022
prompt:
Furniture lines created by Anova in the past have been called heavy and occasionally over engineered. The goal for this product was to create a line that had a visual and physical lightness to starkly contrast what has been made previously by Anova. The furniture line originally would consist of 6 pieces: a dining chair, a dining table, a receptacle, a backless bench, a bench with a back, and a bike rack. The project began looking at minimalistic objects for inspiration.

The sketch period for the project was a couple of weeks. We started the process with a design charrette where we met with a group of local landscape architects in St. Louis. We were able to take advice from this session and work on developing multiple possible concepts to bring back to them two weeks later. The concept I chose to start to develop was subsequently picked to be move into development and prototyping.

Prototyping round 1
We had to move into metal prototypes immediately as we wanted to get feedback at the national ASLA conference which was a few short weeks out. We moved quickly and were able to turn them around to take to Nashville, TN with us.
national asla conference November 2021
From ASLA, we were able to pull quite a bit of information from many of the people that came to visit us. We got plenty of information on ergonomic issues as well as other issues like weight, size, and construction issues.
Prototyping Round 2
We went small with the second round and did 1:5 scale models as a lot of the issues we returned to the office with were proportion issues. We took these out and got feedback from multiple landscape architecture firms in St. Louis, Chicago, and Omaha and heard that they liked the pieces overall, but the chair and contour bench did not seem to fit as well as with the original concept sketches. We went back to the sketchbook and made changes to bring them back in line with the rest of the line.
