Anova furnishings | 2023-2024

prompt:

Design a line that contains products that work in both public and private sector projects.

This line is a continuation of the new product language established in the vibe line of visually lightweight in nature and fully fabricated by our facilities.

sketching

These sketches are from the first review where we wanted to establish what the lines visual language would be. Myself and the other designer drew up several concepts and reviewed what we liked and what we didn’t from the concepts presented. The goal at the end of it was to take the key pieces from concepts and start to develop refined concepts using those pieces. We identified an A-frame that we had both gravitated towards in some of our concepts that seemed to work towards the simplistic forms we were trying to capture.

prototyping

From the feedback in the concept review sessions, I began working on full scale and 1:5 scale models of various pieces that we wanted to include in the line. The photos below show various steps in that process of making a 1:1 of the initial chair concept, as well as multiple 1:5 scale models of the receptacle, pet waste station, flat bench, and dining table. As we went through development, we found that the initial concept for the furniture felt disjointed. We ultimately changed the design of various pieces in the line to create a much more cohesive visual.

full material prototyping

The pet waste station was especially interesting as this was a product Anova had not created in the past. We recognized that customers would frequently buy products that were functionally great, but were lacking in overall design.

We took this challenge on and developed a 5 gallon receptacle with a bag dispenser on top that looks and feels great!
